The American Tower Raleigh Data Center represents a significant advancement as an Aggregation Edge Data Center. Its core design purpose is to bring cloud services closer to the network edge, thereby enhancing cloud computing performance and enabling the efficient exchange of network traffic. This innovative approach is specifically structured to provide deterministic latency experiences and facilitate the deployment of more distributed cloud services and network peering.
The facility is strategically located in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S., within close proximity to academic institutions and large enterprises situated in Research Triangle Park. This ideal location is intended to capitalize on the region's rapid growth and technological ecosystem, ensuring that the data center can effectively serve the local demand for advanced computing and network services.
The Raleigh Data Center boasts substantial power capabilities. At full build-out, the facility is expected to deliver four megawatts (4 MW) of power. The initial build is designed to utilize one megawatt (1 MW) of live power across 4,000 square feet of white space. The maximum power supported per rack is 15 kW, ensuring robust support for high-density compute environments.
Construction for this groundbreaking project officially commenced in June 2024, with the target for completion and the year operational set for the first quarter of 2025. This development is particularly significant as it marks American Tower’s entry into a new class of data center offerings, establishing a precedent for future innovations in the critical field of edge computing.
The facility is designed with high redundancy standards to ensure continuous operation. Its critical infrastructure includes N+1 UPS Redundancy, N+2 Cooling Redundancy, and N+1 Standby Power Redundancy. The total building size is 16,000 square feet, providing ample space for the technical build-out and support systems. The center will support 1 peering network.
To cater to diverse customer needs, the facility offers flexible space options including Full Cabinets, Partial Cabinets, and Shared Rackspace. Customers can also utilize Remote Hands services for operational support. Security is ensured through CCTV surveillance, Card Access Control, and a comprehensive Automatic Fire Suppression system, maintaining a secure and reliable operating environment.
