Cologix (NNJ2) Data Center

This purpose-built, single occupant facility, operated by Net Access Corporation (now part of Cologix), is a Tier 3 data center located in a suburban office park in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey. The facility, which became operational in 2006, is designed for high-density colocation services and undergoes an annual SAS-70 Type II Audit. It offers flexible colocation options including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, and private suites.

The data center is strategically located approximately 40 minutes from Manhattan and 30 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport. Its position near major New Jersey thoroughfares (Routes 10, 24, 80 & 287) ensures easy access by car and bus. Furthermore, it is situated about a mile from the Morris Plains train station, which provides Midtown Direct train service. The facility amenities support customer needs with office suites, conference facilities, server build areas, restrooms with showers, and a kitchen with vending machines.

The Cedar Knolls facility is notable for its ultra high power density, capable of accommodating up to 20 kW (167 amps @ 120v) per cabinet in high density areas. This is significantly higher than the 4 kW ceiling found in many other data centers, allowing customers to fully utilize their cabinet space without expanding their physical footprint. The facility utilizes a metered billing method, meaning customers pay only for the power they actually consume, as opposed to flat-rate or per-circuit pricing.

The facility's power systems are configured for high availability using an N+1 redundancy scheme. This setup includes Eaton PowerWare UPS systems (equipped with individual battery validation) backed by diesel generators to ensure continuous operation during utility outages. The power distribution is versatile, supporting single pole (120v), double pole (208v), and triple pole (three-phase) power circuits.

Similar to the power infrastructure, the cooling systems are also configured in an N+1 redundancy arrangement. This design ensures that there is always one extra cooling component available beyond the minimum required (N) to support the critical load. This allows for planned maintenance or the failure of a single component without disrupting the data center's cooling, thus maintaining optimal operating temperatures for IT equipment.

The data center employs a rigorous, multi-layered security system, featuring 24/7/365 on-site security personnel. Physical access to secure areas is controlled by a highly restrictive Three-Factor Man-trap system, which requires a Proximity Card, biometric fingerprint reader, and a facial geometry scanner, complete with anti-passback functionality. Cage access uses Two-Factor authentication (Proximity card / biometric fingerprint reader). A High Definition CCTV network continuously covers all interior and exterior strategic locations and access points, with a 90-day video retention policy.

The facility is highly connected with offerings from Net Access Corporation and provides Extended Cross-Connect options to major carrier hotels: 60 Hudson St. - TelX - NYC, 25 Broadway - Telehouse - NYC, and 165 Halsey St. - Equinix - Newark, NJ. It is considered carrier-neutral and features numerous Major On-Net Carriers including Verizon Telco, Verizon Business (former MCI / UUnet), Level 3, AboveNet, and Optimum Lightpath, providing diverse and redundant connectivity choices. The Meet-Me-Room (MMR) is used for peering networks.

The Cedar Knolls data center meets or exceeds the specifications of a Tier 3 data center as defined by The Uptime Institute. A Tier 3 rating signifies that the facility is concurrently maintainable with N+1 redundancy in all critical systems, allowing for any planned maintenance activity without an outage. Additionally, the facility undergoes an annual SAS-70 Type II Audit (now often referred to as SOC 1 or SOC 2 Type II), which provides independent assurance that the service organization's controls are properly designed and operating effectively over a specified period.
