Situated at 50 NE 9th Street in downtown Miami, Florida, this iconic facility serves as a primary gateway for data traffic between North America and Latin America. Originally developed and operated by Terremark Worldwide, the data center was acquired by Verizon in 2011 and later sold to Equinix in 2017, along with 28 other facilities. Since then, it has operated under the Equinix banner as MI1. The building operates as a sole-tenant facility and comprises six floors with mixed floor types. Roof access is available as part of the infrastructure, supporting antenna and communication deployments when needed.
Facility Design and Structure
Spanning six stories and covering a massive 750,000 square feet, MI1 is one of the largest data centers globally. The facility features 255,512 square feet of fully built-out whitespace and is designed to Tier III standards. Engineered for extreme durability, the building is capable of withstanding Category 5 hurricane winds and is located outside of the FEMA 500-year flood zone. Data center floors are elevated 32 feet above sea level, and the structure is constructed with seven-inch-thick steel-reinforced concrete exterior panels to ensure maximum resilience.

The facility holds certifications including HECVAT, HIPAA, ISO 22301, ISO 27001, NIST 800-53/FISMA High, PCI DSS, SOC 1 Type II, and SOC 2 Type II. It is also PCI DSS and Tier III design certified.
Power and Cooling Infrastructure
The data center is equipped with robust infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted service. Power systems are configured with N+1 UPS redundancy and N+1 standby power. Cooling systems are designed with 2N+1 redundancy to maintain consistent environmental conditions across all data halls.

Security is a top priority at MI1, with comprehensive physical safeguards in place. These include mantrap entry, biometric access control, card access systems, and 24/7 CCTV surveillance. A double-interlocked pre-action (dry pipe) fire suppression system is installed along with duct/ceiling-mounted non-aspirated systems.
