Thrive (Thrive UK - Luton)

ONI operates a purpose-built Tier 3+ data centre located in Luton, Bedfordshire, strategically positioned just 35 miles from the City of London. The facility serves as the foundation for ONI’s Virtualisation Infrastructure Platforms (VIP), which are built on Cisco’s Data Centre 3.0 architecture. This advanced framework allows ONI to deliver highly efficient Cloud Services including IaaS, STaaS, BaaS, and DRaaS designed to reduce IT costs by 50 to 70 percent. By leveraging a utility-based "pay for what you use" model, ONI provides customers with enterprise-class scalability, improved application availability, and expert managed hosting without the burden of upfront capital expenditure.

Facility Design and Capacity

Commissioned in 2011, the 19,000 sq. ft. facility is a sole-tenant, purpose-built site featuring 5,200 sq. ft. of whitespace divided into two dedicated data centre halls. The infrastructure is designed to accommodate up to 240 racks, offering flexible tenancy options including communal areas, caged rack space, suites, and footprints. The facility supports high-density requirements with the capability to deliver up to 20kW per rack, ensuring it can handle the most demanding modern server and storage configurations.

Power and Cooling Infrastructure

The site is engineered for high availability with a 1MvA power supply upgradeable to 2MvA and dual diverse feeds provided to every rack. Reliability is guaranteed through dual UPS plant rooms and dual diesel backup generators, ensuring continuous operation during utility failures. Cooling is managed via four 100KvA free-air energy-efficient units in each hall, balancing high-performance thermal management with environmental responsibility.

Security and Fire Protection

To protect critical client infrastructure, the data centre maintains a rigorous security posture featuring 24/7 onsite security staff. The environment is monitored for fire risks using a VESDA Very Early Warning Aspirating Smoke Detection system, which provides the earliest possible warning of a potential event to prevent downtime and protect hardware assets.

Connectivity and Interconnection

The facility boasts a robust connectivity ecosystem with diverse fibre building entries and a dedicated Meet-Me-Room MMR. Customers benefit from diverse connectivity to leading telecommunications providers and the availability of managed internet to each individual rack. This redundant network architecture is central to ONI’s ability to deliver seamless Unified Communications, collaboration tools, and rapid Disaster Recovery replication.

Certifications and Standards

The Luton facility is built to Tier 3 design standards, emphasizing high availability and concurrent maintainability. ONI’s status as a Cisco-accredited partner further validates its technical expertise in managing complex virtualised environments. These standards ensure that the infrastructure meets the enterprise-class requirements necessary for hosting sensitive business data and maintaining strict Service Level Agreements SLAs.

Additional Features

Beyond core hosting, the facility offers Remote Hands support and a comprehensive Customer Portal for real-time availability and monitoring. The site includes roof access for specialized equipment and is designed for scalability with expandable whitespace. By integrating these physical features with advanced data protection APIs and deduplication technologies, ONI provides a holistic environment for both server and desktop virtualisation.
