Liverpool City Region Data Centres (Wallasey Water Tower)

Located on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, this disused Grade II listed Water Tower has been transformed into a state-of-the-art Edge Data Centre. Operational since 2025, it combines historic architecture with modern technology, offering a unique multi-tenant (mixed use) colocation facility. The building spans 3,500 sq.m. across five solid-floored levels and provides both indoor rackspace and rooftop colocation for antenna and radio equipment installations.

Facility Design & Capacity

The facility offers flexible colocation options, from 2U vertical racks through to full 48U deep server racks. Customers can choose between full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, or bespoke build-to-suit solutions. With a total capacity of around 125 full-size racks, the data centre also supports whitespace expansion for future scalability.

Power & Cooling Infrastructure

The data centre is powered by a fully built-out capacity of 3.6 MW, with a maximum supported density of 3 kW per rack. It operates with an impressive PUE of 1.15, ensuring high energy efficiency. The power infrastructure is safeguarded with N+1 UPS redundancy, providing resilience and reliability for mission-critical operations.

Security & Fire Protection

As a multi-tenant facility, the Water Tower data centre employs secure access controls, robust monitoring, and operational safeguards to protect customer assets. The building’s retrofit design also integrates modern fire protection and safety systems, meeting industry standards for colocation environments.

Connectivity & Interconnection

The site is strategically connected to major network providers and exchange points, including IX Liverpool, Baltic Broadband, IX Reach, Neos Networks, Telcom Networks, Sky Business, Vodafone, and LCR Connect, among others. This extensive interconnection ecosystem ensures low-latency connectivity and diverse carrier options.

Certifications & Standards

Constructed as a retrofitted, Grade II listed building, the facility meets modern compliance and operational standards expected from a contemporary colocation environment, while preserving its historic character.

Additional Features

The data centre offers roof access for colocation of antennas and radio transmission equipment, providing opportunities for wireless and broadcast applications. Its five-floor structure, solid flooring, and expandable whitespace make it a flexible and scalable hub for enterprises seeking edge connectivity in Cheshire and beyond.
