The 6degrees Birmingham Central data center is a cornerstone of the Midlands’ digital economy, strategically positioned within Birmingham’s thriving technological hub. Spanning a total building size of 5,800 sq.m., the facility offers 2,000 sq.m. of dedicated technical whitespace. As a purpose built structure that became operational in 2015, it was designed from the ground up to accommodate a variety of hardware configurations. Clients can choose from flexible deployment options including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, or bespoke cages and suite footprints, all supported by a high density power capacity of 1.5 kW per sq.m.

At the core of the facility’s reliability is its 4.3 MW fully built out power capacity and its Uptime Institute Tier III Design Certification. This rating ensures a high level of fault tolerance and redundancy. The electrical architecture features N+1 UPS redundancy and N+1 standby power redundancy, ensuring that critical operations remain uninterrupted even during external power failures.

To maintain optimal performance for high density hardware, the data center utilizes a sophisticated cooling system with N+1 redundancy. This infrastructure is designed with a Power Usage Effectiveness value of 1.3, reflecting a strong commitment to energy efficiency. By balancing high performance cooling with low energy overhead, the facility provides a sustainable environment for modern, heat intensive computing tasks.

Security is a paramount feature of the Birmingham Central site, protected by a fenced perimeter and a strict mantrap entry system. The facility employs a multi factor authentication protocol, including biometric and card access controls, to ensure only authorized personnel enter sensitive areas. These physical measures are complemented by continuous CCTV surveillance, providing a comprehensive defense in depth security posture for client data.

The data center acts as a high performance connectivity hub, featuring a dedicated Meet Me Room and access to two primary peering networks. This carrier neutral environment allows for low latency connections and diverse routing options, essential for cloud scalability. Furthermore, the availability of Remote Hands services ensures that clients have technical support on site to manage their physical infrastructure at any time.

Safety and regulatory adherence are ingrained in the facility’s operations. It is equipped with a double interlocked gas based fire suppression system, designed to extinguish threats without damaging sensitive electronic equipment.
