Stellanor Datacenters (Redcentric’s Reading) Data Center

Redcentric’s Reading Data Centre is a purpose built next generation facility designed specifically to address rising energy costs and environmental impact. Through careful planning of power and cooling systems, the site targets a Power Usage Effectiveness rating of 1.25 or better, a major improvement compared to the UK industry average of 2.0 or higher. A key contributor to this efficiency is the free air cooling system, which draws in ambient outside air through window louvres during colder months. This approach significantly reduces dependence on energy intensive chiller units, delivering a more sustainable and cost effective hosting environment.

Built in line with Tier 3 guidelines to support concurrent maintenance, the facility delivers a total power capacity of up to 3 MW. Rack configurations can be customised to meet individual client requirements, with options for single phase or three phase power up to 64 Amps, equating to approximately 8 kW per rack. To maintain continuous availability, the infrastructure incorporates full 2N UPS redundancy alongside N plus 1 backup generator protection using Riello and Perkins hardware. This resilient electrical design safeguards against local power interruptions while supporting high density hardware workloads.

Environmental conditions across the 15,000 square foot facility are managed using high efficiency Rittal cold aisle pods combined with Weatherite BTR45EC air handling units. Cooling performance is continuously optimised through computer monitored HVAC systems that maintain precise temperature and airflow control. Fire protection is provided by an IG55 inert gas suppression system, which safely extinguishes fire risks without harming sensitive electronic equipment, preserving the integrity of customer infrastructure.

Security is a core focus of the Reading site, which is located outside the London M25 ring to reduce exposure to metropolitan power disruptions and security risks. The facility holds ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and PCI DSS certifications for Physical Hosting Services. Physical safeguards include round the clock onsite security personnel, comprehensive CCTV monitoring and proximity photo ID card access controls. Customers using shared environments benefit from segregated perimeters and dedicated proximity access for their individual rack areas.

The data centre operates on a carrier neutral basis, allowing organisations full flexibility when selecting network providers. It is tightly integrated into Redcentric’s multi meshed MPLS network and powered by enterprise grade infrastructure including Cisco ASR9000 routers and Cisco Nexus 7000 switches. This robust networking platform delivers low latency and high availability connectivity, making the site ideally suited for mission critical cloud hosting and virtual server environments.
