Digital Realty (STO1) Data Center

Formerly known as Interxion STO1, this facility was rebranded following Digital Realty’s acquisition of Interxion in 2022. It is strategically situated in Kista, approximately 15km north of Stockholm. As the heart of Sweden’s Information and Communications Technology ICT industry, this location provides a prime geographic advantage for businesses looking to anchor their digital infrastructure in a high tech hub.

The data center serves as a massive connectivity nexus, hosting a growing community of carriers, ISPs, and Internet Exchanges. Customers benefit from direct access to Netnod, the Swedish Internet Exchange, and more than 45 low latency network providers. With dual entry fiber and SLA based cross connects, the facility is designed to reduce network costs while significantly boosting performance for global data exchange.

Power reliability is a cornerstone of STO1, which offers managed power with in built resilience to allow for equipment scaling without outages. The facility features a total power capacity of 3.3 MW and utilizes a 2N UPS redundancy configuration. To ensure continuous operation, N+1 backup generators are on site, capable of supporting the facility at full capacity for 36 hours with high speed refueling protocols in place.

The site spans a total building size of 4,300 sq. m., with 1,877 sq. m. of fully built out whitespace. It offers a versatile range of colocation options to suit different business scales, including full and partial cabinets, shared rackspace, private cages, and customized suites. Beyond the server floor, the facility provides practical amenities such as conference rooms, dedicated office space, and 24/7 onsite technical Remote Hands support.

Digital Realty STO1 is a specialist hub for the financial services market, hosting investment firms, hedge funds, and high frequency traders. It provides low latency connectivity to major exchanges, including Nasdaq OMX, Burgundy, and the Nordic Derivatives Exchange. This ecosystem allows participants to access market data vendors and clearing services while maintaining high speed links to other global financial centers like London, Frankfurt, and Zurich.

Security at the facility is handled through a rigorous five layer physical defense system. This includes 24/7 onsite security staff, mantrap entries, biometric access control, and constant CCTV surveillance. Furthermore, the facility maintains world class compliance standards, including ISO 27001 for information security, SOC 2 Type II, and PCI DSS compliance, ensuring a secure environment for sensitive data.

To protect mission critical hardware, the data center utilizes a climate controlled environment that adheres strictly to ASHRAE temperature and humidity recommendations. Fire protection is equally robust, featuring fire retardant walls, VESDA Very Early Warning Aspirating Smoke Detection systems, and automatic gas based fire suppression. These systems are monitored 24/7 to prevent any environmental threats to the hardware.

The Stockholm facility is a pioneer in green technology, utilizing 100% renewable energy. It famously implemented one of the world's first seawater cooling systems in 2009 and continues to use free cooling and waste heat re use. This sustainable approach allows the data center to operate at an exceptionally low and constant Power Usage Effectiveness PUE, remaining unaffected by the external energy spikes typically caused by summer heatwaves.
