Africa Data Centres is expanding its Midrand facility in Johannesburg to address the surging demand for data centres across Africa, driven by rapid digital transformation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The expansion will provide scalable colocation solutions tailored to both small businesses and large enterprises, with services ranging from low-density to high-density rack configurations.
Facility Design & Capacity
The Tier-4 standard facility is unique in South Africa and is designed to deliver maximum reliability and operational resilience. The expansion will add four new data halls, providing 6,000 m² of white space and a client IT load of 20 MW upon completion. The fully built-out whitespace will reach 9,000 m², with flexible options including Full Cabinets, Partial Cabinets, Shared Rackspace, Cages, and Suites.
Power & Cooling Infrastructure
The site will feature a fully built-out power capacity of 14.5 MW and a maximum power per rack of 20 kW. UPS redundancy is configured at 2N, while cooling redundancy follows an N+2 design to ensure continuous operation. Hot aisle and cold aisle containment systems will enhance cooling efficiency, supporting high-density deployments and energy optimization.
Security & Fire Protection
All critical infrastructure and security systems will be managed and monitored 24/7 through a security operations centre and service control centre. CCTV surveillance is deployed throughout the facility. A low-pressure gas fire suppression system is installed in the data halls and is triggered by a double-knock detection fire alarm, ensuring rapid and reliable fire protection.
Connectivity & Interconnection
The expanded facility will provide direct connectivity to major network hubs and Dark Fibre Infrastructure. It includes a dedicated Meet-Me-Room (MMR), enabling seamless interconnection. Currently, the site offers access to 22 network providers and 1 peering network, ensuring strong connectivity options for customers.
