In 2020, stc Group initiated a strategic plan to create a digital hub for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, aligning with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's (KSA) Vision 2030.

This initiative, initially named "MENAHub," evolved into a new, independent entity called center3.

Valued at an estimated $2 billion by the end of its first year, center3 is a key component of stc's broader goal to establish KSA as a central point for global data connectivity, linking Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Cooling and Redundancy

The facility employs a chilled water cooling system with a dual flow and return design. This system uses isolating valves at each T-section to allow for maintenance without shutting down the entire system. For the computer room air handler (CRAH) units, an N+1 redundancy scheme is in place to ensure a backup unit is available, supporting a data center cooling load of 1000 W/m². A fuel oil generator provides emergency power, with a fuel oil storage capacity of 67 hours at 100% load. A Computerized Building Management System (BMS) is used to verify and manage the mechanical and electrical (M&E) equipment.

Electrical Systems

The electrical connected load is 10.75 MVA with a demand load of 9 MVA. The system uses 8 x 2500 kVA power transformers operating at 380/220V, 3P, 4W, 60 Hz. For backup power, there are 5 x 2000 kVA/1600 kW continuous rated diesel generators designed in an N+1 configuration. Two sets of paralleling switchgear are used for concurrently maintainable requirements, monitored and controlled by two separate load shedding panels. The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a parallel redundant system in an N+N configuration, using 200 kVA modular units with 30 minutes of battery autonomy at full load to support a data center load of 1000 W/m². The rectifier system is an Active + Active (N+N) configuration, providing 200 W/m² and 1000 Ah with a 2 + 2 hours battery autonomy time.

Security Systems and Tier Design

The security system consists of an IP access control system and IP CCTV, which are integrated with the BMS to provide only On/Off status as per the security department's requirements. The facility offers various hosting options, including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, and suites. The tier design and certification for the facility is Tier 3. Security is maintained by onsite security staff 24/7.
