The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) serves as the central provider for the government's digital needs, offering efficient, effective, and secure ICT infrastructure and services. Its primary mandate is to support the operation of the Maltese Public Administration by managing core digital services. These services include a hybrid cloud infrastructure, a unified email platform, high-speed internet access, and a secure Wide Area Network (WAN) built on a fibre-optic backbone to interconnect all ministries and government entities.

The foundation of Malta's digital government is the MITA Data Centre, a certified Tier III facility hosting the vast majority of government information systems, including mission-critical applications. This setup is specifically engineered for maximum resiliency and redundancy, ensuring continuous service availability 24/7. It implements comprehensive security measures, covering both physical facilities management (like CCTV surveillance, Biometric Access, and 24/7 onsite security staff) and ICT infrastructure security, alongside rigorous backup protocols for all hosted data.

To maintain continuous and reliable service delivery, the services and applications running through the Data Centre are proactively monitored 24 x 7 by specialized Operations Centre staff. In addition to technical monitoring, the facility provides constant human support. This includes 24/7 onsite technical staff and remote hands services to manage physical hardware installations, whether for full cabinets, partial cabinets, or shared rackspace, ensuring rapid response to any incident.

Beyond the core data centre operations, MITA acts as a crucial support hub for government employees. It equips the workforce with modern desktop facilities, covering essential hardware, support services, software licences, and collaborative software. Furthermore, MITA streamlines incident resolution by serving as the single point of contact for all ICT-related issues, simplifying support and maintenance for the entire Public Administration.

The MITA Data Centre is designed with the future in mind, incorporating scalable technology components and 1600 sq.m. of fully built-out whitespace to facilitate seamless expansion and the adoption of emerging technologies. Importantly, MITA demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental responsibility through sustainability investments. This includes utilising renewable energy sources and deploying energy-efficient equipment to ensure the Data Centre operates with a significantly smaller environmental footprint.
